    Emergency Situation in Northern Sri Lanka December 2018 – Update from Muslim Aid Sri Lanka

    Muslim Aid’s rapid response team swiftly acted on the ground by responding to the emergency flood situation in northern Sri Lanka – namely Kilinochi and Mullaithivu; within 48 hours .The team along with volunteers and partner organization visited the affected regions with hygiene packs to cover their most urgent needs. The relief items were packed and distributed within 48 hours, to almost 500 families who were taking shelter in camps as the flood waters had entered their homes and the water levels were on the rise. The most affected area was Parathipuram of the Kilinochi district.

    The intervention was carried out with the coordination of government authorities in the district as well as security personnel of the area who supported the MASL team to access the affected people on the ground.

    MASL was able to reach out to all communities through this intervention yet again helping us reinforce social cohesion among these different ethnic communities. This was enabled by the the involvement of faith leaders who have been supportive of Muslim Aid’s activities on the ground.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka Was Able Responds Immediately Partnering With ADRA And Child Fund

    In late May 2017, The Southwest Monsoon caused flooding and landslides most of the parts of Sri Lanka, causing massive damage to hundreds of homes. The flood affected more than 545,283 people and over 180 people were killed and more than 103 people remain missing, while an estimated 80,409 people belonging to 20,101 families displaced.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka was able responds immediately partnering with ADRA and Child Fund, we worked in the multi-cultural communities of Matara District where 93 percent of those who were affected by the disaster. We concentrated our effort in the Divisional Secretariats of Pitabeddara and Athuraliya and Gale District distributed 1,640 emergency kits that include non-food items (NFIs) and dry food rations that will help the displaced families for a month.

    As we conclude our emergency response, we are challenged of addressing health and sanitation issues of displaced children, pregnant and the elderly women.

    Back 2 Business For Flood Victims

    35 families were supported under the first phase of Back to Business Emergency Flood Recovery Project, the initial distribution was taken place on 9th of September 2016. This programme was implemented by Muslim Aid Sri Lanka, with the funding support of Sri Lanka Muslim Cultural Centre (SLMCC) – East London, Inter Build Aid (IBA) UK, and coordination of All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU)

        With the detailed data collection,  need assessment and analysis by Muslim Aid Sri Lanka in Megoda Kolonnawa, Wennawatta & Kohilawatta areas the shortlisted families have received different type of livelihood supports such as welding, food processing & cooing, tailoring, textiles, vending cart, groceries etc. were provide to those affected families to start their income generation activities under this B2B programme  .

        The people from Kolonnawa Divisional secretariat area had to face many hardship due to the recent flooding. Although many institutions from Government and Non-Governmental sector have helped   affected during to rescue and recovery period. However as number of affected families are   huge and there are number of families needed support to start their livelihood initiatives.

    Flood Relief Intervention 2016

    Initially, Muslim Aid Sri Lanka provided immediate relief with its rapid response team for the people who were internally displaced during the heavy flooding with Hygiene packs and Dry Rations packs. Following it, MASL engaged in the distribution of Instant Food, Non Food Items, Hygiene packs, Dry ration packs, Back to Work kits and gift vouchers to further aid the flood victims. These were carried out by the generosity of the donors who joined hands with MASL during the emergency state.

     Due to the stagnant water and poor garbage management system in Colombo district, houses and roads were ruined continuing with a spread of diseases. With the support of the volunteers, MASL engaged in helping to clean the houses along with the roads. Additionally, MASL also distributed cleaning kits to aid them further in the cleaning process and conducted medical camps to combat the spread of disease among the victims. Furthermore, our volunteers also contributed their time to feed the data base of the affected people under Relief Coordination Center (RCC).

    Currently, along with the distribution of kitchen utensils MASL is engaged in its “Back2Business” project to uplift the lives of the flood victims by giving livelihood solution and support.
