    Muslim Aid supports Model School Gardening Project to encourage Self-cultivation under the Livelihood and Food Security Program.

    Muslim Aid continues its efforts to help the vulnerable and affected families in the country due to the current economic crises by supporting 5 schools in the Trincomalee district under the model school gardening project. MASL has been supporting vulnerable households in a number of districts in the country to encourage self-cultivation under the livelihood and food security program.

    Muslim Aid believes that Sri Lanka, as an agricultural-based country, should promote, encourage and inculcate youth involvement from a young age and provide the necessary subject knowledge and technical know-how to use mulching systems, sprinklers, drip irrigation systems, and greenhouses from the secondary schooling age itself, so that students will engage in cultivational activities which will motivate them to use in their homes.

    Under its livelihood and food security program, MASL supports capable but vulnerable beneficiaries in urban and rural areas to cultivate food for consumption purposes as well as to earn through selling their extra harvest. Muslim Aid also is implementing a community gardening project where community members will engage in community gardening in familiar but safe places and cultivate vegetation as needed.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka (MASL) has inked a partnership with Sabrina Yusoof Foundation (SYF) to provide potable water for vulnerable households in the East.

    A MOU was signed between MASL and SYF to support the installation of an initial number of 500 pipe borne potable water connections in the Batticaloa district. These water connections are provided to women-headed and vulnerable families who do not have access to water connections due to their financial situation.

    Since its inception, Muslim Aid has been providing potable water to vulnerable households and communities under its Water for Life (WFL) project through various avenues including mini water supply systems and permanent pipe borne potable water etc. Recently, MASL launched a water provision campaign that aims to provide 1,000 pipe borne potable water connections in the span of one year.

    SYF was recently incorporated as a social service organisation in remembrance of Sabrina Yusoof’s dream to support the capacity of vulnerable women in society. One of the main objectives of the foundation is to facilitate women’s empowerment, focusing on mothers and working women and striving to alleviate poverty in Sri Lanka. Another objective of the foundation is to support environmental sustainability programs focused on water and reforestation initiatives.

    Commenting on the initiative, the Country Director of Muslim Aid, Faizer Khan mentioned that through the increased access to water facilities, beneficiaries can use water for their daily hygiene and nutrition needs, as well as conduct home gardening activities through waste water.

    Further, he mentioned that rural folks suffer the brunt of the current economic situation in the country, with the added burden of having to spend their meager daily wages to obtain a water connection for themselves and their families.

    The CEO of SYF, Ms. Sarah Rahman, mentioned that they would be happy to work with Muslim Aid, which has years of on-the-ground experience and influence within target communities, to achieve the objectives of the SYF.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka Distributes Maternity Packs to Expectant Mothers

    With the country facing a severe economic crisis, one of the most affected groups are women. Most financially vulnerable expectant mothers face severe challenges in managing their expenses during the childbirth period.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka with the support of UNHCR distributed over 1000 Maternity Packs to Expectant Mothers. Two handing-over events were held recently, one in Colombo South Teaching Hospital (CSTH) – Kalubowila and one in the District General Hospital – Negombo. The Country Director of Muslim Aid Sri Lanka and Staff, Director and Deputy Directors of the Hospitals, Consultants, Doctors, Nurses, and other Staff participated in the event.

    The directors of the hospitals highly appreciated our support at this crucial juncture in the country where the health sector faces huge challenges in acquiring the necessary medicines and medical equipment due to the economic crisis and shortfall of foreign reserves. The Country Director of Muslim Aid thanked UNHCR for their funding contribution for Maternity Packs for the Expectant Mothers, with the partnership of Muslim Aid Sri Lanka.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka has been implementing humanitarian projects in the health sector for over a decade through various interventions including the provision of lifesaving essential medicines, hospital equipment, nutritional food packs, and hygienic packs to vulnerable families.
