Our team participated in a another village consultative meeting at Vilankulam village in Trincomalee, where those who were displaced a number of times during the civil war were resettled. Despite wanting to start anew and resume their normal lives, the people of the village live have very limited access to basic facilities, thus continuously facing hardship and anguish.
The most harrowing problem being the complete lack of public transport facilities from the from village to main road. This has caused a great deal of difficulty especially for children, who have to go to school and return home by walking several kilometers through jungle roads early in the morning and late afternoon. The villagers also do not have access to clean water and have to walk a significant distance to fetch water for drinking & cooking purposes. Basic sanitation facilities and scarcity of livelihood opportunities are also some of the issues encountered by the villagers.
